AAI 102: How Social Media Shapes Today’s Aesthetic Beauty Trends
December 17, 2024
In this episode of “Anti-Aging Insights,” Dr. Teri Fisher explores the transformative impact of social media on aesthetic trends, highlighting how platforms like Instagram and TikTok are reshaping beauty standards globally. Traditionally, beauty trends were dictated by mainstream media, but today, individuals are crafting and sharing their own unique styles through social media channels. This shift allows trends to become global sensations almost overnight, largely driven by influencers who share their beauty routines and tips.
Dr. Fisher uses the example of the “fox eye” trend, a look popularized by celebrities such as Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner, to illustrate how quickly social media can propel a beauty trend. With tutorials sweeping across these platforms, this trend exemplifies the rapid spread of aesthetic practices heralded by social media.
Skincare is another sector heavily influenced by social media, with hashtags like #SkincareRoutine and #GlowUp gaining significant traction. These platforms educate consumers, making them well-informed buyers as they adopt popular products like hyaluronic acid or niacinamide. Social media endorsements by influencers can lead to aesthetic treatments designed to produce results that are visually striking and perfect for sharing online.
While social media amplifies beauty trends, it also offers a platform for authenticity and diversity. It allows individuals to challenge conventional beauty standards and celebrate different body types, sizes, and skin tones. Dr. Fisher appreciates this aspect of social media, though he expresses concern about the tendency to mimic others rather than embrace individual beauty.
As the integration of social media and the beauty industry continues, features like Instagram’s shop function and TikTok’s product links make it easier for users to engage with and purchase beauty products. Dr. Fisher advises listeners to approach these trends critically, reminding them that self-expression, authenticity, and mindfulness remain key as we navigate this evolving landscape.

Well, today we’re diving into the powerful influence of social media on aesthetic trends. From the fox eye look to the latest skincare fads, we’re going to explore how platforms like Instagram and TikTok are reshaping the beauty world.
So in the past, beauty standards were largely controlled by traditional media outlets. With the rise of social media, individuals have become the curators of their own unique styles. As you know, platforms like Instagram and TikTok have transformed the way beauty trends spread.
And now, beauty trends can go global in just a matter of days, reaching audiences worldwide across continents. Social media has become a powerhouse in the aesthetics industry. And you can see that with lots of different influencers posting all of their beauty routines and what they are doing to keep themselves looking as young and as vibrant as they possibly can.

I’ll give you one example. Have you ever seen the fox eye trend? This is a look that has been popularized by celebrities like Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner, and it involves emphasizing the outer corners of the eyes to create an upward slant, kind of mimicking the almond shaped eyes of a fox. There are now countless tutorials on TikTok and Instagram, and this trend has become a staple in many beauty routines, showing just how quickly social media can influence beauty standards.
Now there’s another big component to the aesthetics industry that is very much influenced by what is going on in social media. And that is skincare. There are what seems like a million of different hashtags all over social media, things like #SkincareRoutine, #GlowUp. These have become incredibly popular and influencers and users are sharing their favorite products and their routines online.
Remember the surge or interest in hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, or other different routines? Well, that’s all thanks to social media as well. These platforms have turned consumers into informed and discerning buyers. So, that’s a really important part to note as well. This is something that people Personally, I think is really nice about social media. I do have a little bit of a philosophical problem when someone posts something and then everybody just tries to copy that because I don’t think that’s really bringing out your individual beauty. What I like to see is when people are celebrating their individual body type, sizes, and skin tones as I said earlier.
In fact underrepresented communities are now able to reclaim their voices, and have the ability to alter perceptions of what is considered beautiful. So as we move forward, the integration of social media and the beauty industry is only going to become more and more seamless.
There are features like Instagram’s shop function and TikTok’s product links functions. It makes it easier than ever to discover and purchase these beauty products. But remember, while this digital revolution has many benefits, it’s essential to approach these trends With a critical eye. What works for someone else might not work for you.
