Episode Transcript
Dr. Teri Fisher: Hello and welcome to this week’s episode of the podcast. This is a continuation of our series into the trends in the aesthetic medicine industry, and if you haven’t listened to the past two episodes, starting with episodes, number 67 and 68, then encourage you to do so. I was talking about the macro movements in the industry, which include increasing accessibility, advances in science and technology, and social community. And these are the macro movements that Galderma has identified in their NEXT report. In the subsequent episode, episode number 68, we talked about the first actual trend, which was proactive beauty, so if you haven’t heard that one, then please again, I encourage you to go back and listen to that.
Today we are diving into the next trend known as “Mindful Aesthetics”, and this is all about embracing minimal, sustainable, ethical, and natural aesthetic products, and this is having a huge impact on what we are seeing going forward in this industry.
Today I want you to describe to you a little bit more about this trend of mindful aesthetics, why is it important, and how does this trend actually look when it comes to the decisions that people are making with their treatments.
So again, mindful aesthetics. When you think of mindful nowadays we’re thinking about minimal, we’re thinking about sustainable, we’re thinking about less is more. These are the main concepts when it comes to mindful beauty, and this has certainly reached the aesthetic market.
People are more and more embracing products with minimal environmental impact that align with their own ethical values and provide natural looking results. And we are seeing statistics that support these trends. What’s driving it? Well again, the Galderma NEXT report identifies that as a society, we are increasingly aware that what we put into our bodies can impact our health and beauty. Consumers are expecting more transparency and accountability, and they want to know more of the details about what they’re putting on and in their bodies.
When we dive a little bit deeper, there are actually three key concepts that make up the “mindful aesthetics” trend. One of these is known as the “no makeup look”. Natural looking aesthetics does not mean no work. The no makeup look refers to the fact that people are embracing the natural look. They want themselves to look radiant. They want themselves to look as good as they possibly can, but not over done. It is the sense that things are done in a way that amplifies the natural beauty, and if you will, the “no makeup look”. I think this is wonderful trend as it really emphasizes the person’s own beautiful features, and this is what this “no-makeup look” is all about.
The second concept is known as “naturally in sync.” What “naturally in sync” refers to is the fact that artificial or overdone treatments are now out, or at least they are on their way out. This is not what people are requesting these days. They want to have natural results. And this ties in with this first concept that I was speaking about. Additionally, not only the treatment, but the actual product more and more is requested to be something that is made of natural substances. If you take, for example, the boom in hyaluronic acid treatments, which of course is a natural substance, we are seeing that consumers are more and more interested in using these natural products in their beauty enhancements.
And the third concept is something that is being referred to as “free from.” And of course, when you think of “free from”, the first thing that comes to mind is what are the ingredients in a treatment? We are seeing these “free from” credentials on the rise. We are seeing more plant-based ingredients in beauty and aesthetic treatments, and what’s interesting is the majority of gen Z and millennial women from around the world claim that they would actually pay more for an eco friendly product. And that is about 56% in Canada, up to about 64% in Brazil, for example. So again, this emphasizes the importance of eco-friendly products and we are certainly seeing a trend in that aspect.
So what’s next here? We’re going to see continued trends in having a “no makeup look”, something that looks natural, we are going to see “naturally in sync”, not being overdone but using natural products to create natural results, and as well, the “free from” ingredients in all these aesthetic and beauty products.
So I hope that’s interesting to you. That is another one of the main treatment trends that we are seeing: mindful aesthetics. And I look forward to chatting with you again next week to highlight yet another trend from the Galderma. NEXT report.
