FAQs about PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)

What is PRP? And why are PRP Treatments so popular in Vancouver?

PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma, a form of regenerative medicine that can be used for a variety of therapeutic and aesthetic conditions. Platelet-rich plasma has the ability to heal and even regenerate damaged, lost, or aging tissue.

PRP uses a patient’s own (autologous) blood and no other constituents are added to the injection. For that reason, it is appealing to patients who want more of a ‘natural approach’ to aesthetics and injuries.

While PRP is still technically considered ‘experimental’, these treatments are becoming more and more popular in Vancouver as increasing medical evidence continues to mount on the benefits of PRP.

Really, how does PRP work? I want to know the nitty-gritty.

The magic in Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections comes from the platelets. Platelets are one of the types of cells found in blood and they have a critical role in repairing tissue and producing a number of growth factors. These growth factors are critical in helping the body to heal itself and regenerate tissue.

Imagine if we could concentrate those platelets and growth factors, and strategically place them into tissue that we want to repair or regenerate? This is exactly what PRP treatments do.

How do you perform a PRP treatment?

PRP injections are minimally invasive, safe, and quick. PRP treatments follow a specific set of steps that are quickly and easily performed in the clinic from start to finish:

  1. An initial clinic consultation is required to discuss the suitability of PRP for your condition.
  2. If the condition is suitable for PRP, Dr. Fisher and his team will explain the procedure, risks and aftercare involved to ensure you are fully aware of the treatment process.
  3. A sample of your own blood is drawn, by a process similar to a routine blood test. Typically, 15-60 cc of blood is drawn for PRP (for comparison, the volume of blood taken for a typical blood donation is 450 cc). This is collected in a sterile syringe to prevent infection and contamination.
  4. The blood is then processed in a special centrifuge, which separates the blood into various components. One of the components, the platelet-rich plasma layer, contains a high concentration of blood platelets and growth factors.
  5. This plasma-rich layer is then extracted and injected back into you, directly into the tissue to be treated.
What areas can be treated with PRP?

PRP can be used for both cosmetic and therapeutic reasons.

Cometic PRP Treatments:
  • Hair Restoration

  • Facial Rejuvenation

Therapeutic PRP Treatments
  • Muscle, tendon, ligament, and cartilage injuries

  • Erectile Dysfunction

How Many PRP Injections are Required?

A series of injections are usually required, often from a few weeks to a month between each injection. The number of injections needed varies according to individual circumstances, but typical treatments with PRP range from 1-3, depending on the tissue.

Are there any risks with PRP?

When the injections are performed by a knowledgable, qualified health care provider, the PRP treatments are very safe. Still, there are minor risks and Dr Fisher makes sure that you are completely informed. He and his staff will have a discussion with you about the potential risks prior to any treatment.

How much does PRP cost in Vancouver?

As you might imagine, there are many variables that go into the pricing of PRP treatments: how many areas are being treated and the location of the areas are just a few. Most importantly, your individual goals are the key factor in determining the appropriate treatment and the corresponding cost. Once we have discussed your goals, we will provide a cost estimate base on your personalized treatment plan.

Are PRP injections painful?

The discomfort is minimal. Initially you will have blood taken from you using a needle similar to that of a standard blood test. Once the PRP is prepared it will be injected back into the tissue using as small needles as possible. We also do have a few tricks to help minimize any discomfort. Feel free to discuss this with Dr. Fisher if this is of particular concern to you.

Is PRP the right treatment for me?

PRP is just one of the cosmetic treatments that Dr. Fisher offers at Anti-Aging Vancouver. Having said that, many women and men around the world have experienced the benefits of PRP and it is one of the most popular treatments, particularly for hair restoration. Dr. Fisher and his team will discuss your options and help you decide if PRP is right for you.
